Negligent Security FAQs

We answer the questions people have when property safety fails.

  • What is considered negligent security?

It means a property owner failed to take reasonable steps to keep visitors safe. That can include missing cameras, no security staff, poor lighting, or failure to respond to known threats.

  • What types of places are responsible for security?

Apartments, parking lots, bars, stores, hotels, and event venues can all be held liable if they failed to provide reasonable security and someone was harmed as a result.

  • What if the attacker is unknown or not caught?

You can still bring a civil claim. We don’t need to identify or convict the attacker—only prove that the property owner’s failure to secure the premises contributed to your injury.

  • What damages can I recover?

You may be eligible for compensation for medical costs, therapy, lost income, and pain and suffering. In some cases, punitive damages may apply.

  • Is there a time limit to file?

Yes—Illinois generally allows two years from the date of injury. We recommend contacting us as soon as possible to start investigating while evidence is still fresh.
