The Incident
The July 21, 2019 Sunday Edition of the Chicago Sun-Times featured a report by Staff Reporter Stephanie Zimmerman. The Page 6 article, “From Routine to Tragic,” reported on the death of Sarah Crayton in 2014. Sarah’s daughter, Shamona Nichols, hired the attorneys of Coogan Gallagher to investigate her mother’s medical care. Later, a medical malpractice lawsuit was filed in 2016 against Dr. Gomberg-Maitland and the University of Chicago Medical Center. The case proceeded to a trial in May, 2019. At the conclusion of the evidence of the medical treatment, Nichols’ attorneys claimed that the decision by Dr. Gomberg led to Sarah’s death 6 days later. The jury agreed, found Dr. Gomberg’s care negligent and awarded damages in the amount of $3 million.
The Result - As noted, the case has since settled. The hospital agreed to pay $2.6 million now and drop their appeal. This case was also the subject of a June blog post.
